Chapter Eight
Derek listened to Axel talk. Derek already lost one man, and it looked like he might lose two more. How the hell could he let this happen? This was his fault. If he had made it clear they were family, that they could rely on each other, then maybe none of this would have happened. It had been his responsibility to make sure the guys could come to him when they needed him. His agents needed to feel comfortable talking to him about anything, and clearly they didn’t.
One thing he wasn’t taking responsibility for was Mize’s actions. He might have been able to prevent his men from giving into her, but he wouldn’t take credit for her blackmailing methods or for her hurting the very people their agency was designed to protect. It was sickening, and it had to stop.
Axel’s next words broke into his thoughts. “Raven’s brother, Iain, is being held as leverage. And Vance owes money to the wrong people. Well, he owes money to Mize now. A lot of money.”
“First thing is to find Raven and his brother. It sounds like Raven has the most to lose,” Derek said, thinking aloud. The only problem was he had no idea how to do that. The actual physical action of a job was not what his team did. His team did the investigating, not the hunting. The hunting had been Demon Elite’s job.
“We’ll get him out,” Cosmo said. He said it so softly Derek barely heard him. Their eyes met and Cosmo repeated his words. “We’ll get him out, Derek.”
Derek nodded and wondered how this man knew what he was thinking. Was he that transparent? There was something in that moment, some invisible connection that locked them together. Derek didn’t have time to examine the feeling too closely, regardless of how much he really wanted to do just that. He’d happily stand there and look at Cosmo all night, but they had a job to do. For now, it was enough to know that it was there and that he saw the same recognition in Cosmo’s eyes. They’d have to talk later.
Derek looked away and focused on Axel. “Just tell me Vance doesn’t owe people for gambling, because I’m going to kill him if he does.”
“He paid for his mother’s medical expenses. She died last year from some sort of lung disease.” Axel shook his head.
“Did you know Vance was going through all that?”
“Not until yesterday, no. He kept it to himself, for whatever reason.”
That little bit of knowledge that he wasn’t the only one who didn’t know made Derek feel just a little bit better. At least he wasn’t the only one Vance refused to confide in. It seemed everyone on the team was in the dark about Vance’s life.
“Vance doesn’t talk to any of us and never has. He’s an asshole with a gigantic stick up his ass,” Grady said so matter-of-factly it would have been almost comical under different circumstances. Leave it to Grady to put the brutal honest truth out there.
